Exercise and Calorie Burning

Physical activity is the most variable component of your daily calorie expenditure. Two people doing the same activity burn different amounts - body weight, intensity, and fitness level all matter. This calculator uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent) system to estimate calories burned during exercise. MET shows how many times more energy an activity uses compared to rest.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Enter your weight
  2. Select the activity type
  3. Choose the intensity level
  4. Enter the duration in minutes
  5. Click Calculate to see calories burned

Calorie Calculation Formula

Calories = MET × Weight (kg) × Duration (hours)

MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) represents energy expenditure relative to rest. 1 MET = ~1 kcal/kg/hour. Walking is 3-4 MET, running is 8-12 MET.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do different people burn different calories for the same exercise?
Body weight is the biggest factor - heavier people burn more calories. Fitness level, muscle mass, age, and gender also affect calorie burn.
Does cardio or weight training burn more calories?
During exercise, cardio burns more. However, weight training builds muscle which increases BMR, so you burn more calories 24/7. Both have benefits.
Does exercising on an empty stomach burn more fat?
Debatable. Fasted cardio may use more fat as fuel, but total calorie burn stays similar. If performance suffers, you might burn less overall.
What is EPOC (afterburn effect)?
After intense exercise, your body consumes extra oxygen for recovery and burns additional calories. HIIT and weight training increase EPOC more than steady-state cardio.
My fitness watch shows different numbers - which is correct?
Fitness watches use heart rate for more personalized results but can have 15-30% error margins. Focus on consistency and trends rather than exact numbers.
What's the best exercise for weight loss?
The one you'll actually do consistently! HIIT and strength training are efficient, but even walking works if done regularly. Combine with proper nutrition for best results.
How much exercise to burn 1 pound of fat?
1 lb of fat = ~3,500 calories. A 150 lb person would need to run about 35 miles or walk 70+ miles. That's why diet + exercise combination is essential.
