What is Permutation?

A permutation is an arrangement of items where ORDER MATTERS. For example, choosing 3 people from 10 for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place - each arrangement is different.

Permutation Formula

P(n,r) = n! / (n-r)!

Example: P(10,3) = 10!/(10-3)! = 10×9×8 = 720 ways

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between permutation and combination?
In permutations, order matters (ABC ≠ CBA). In combinations, order doesn't matter (ABC = CBA). Use permutations for rankings, sequences, and arrangements.
When should I use permutations?
Use permutations when the order of selection matters: race rankings, password arrangements, seat assignments, phone numbers, etc.
